Chubb Security Personnel win 5 regional BSIA awards
Chubb Security Personnel have scooped five of this year’s BSIA regional awards. The winners automatically go forward to the national judging stage later this year.
The winners will receive their awards at a special ceremony to be held at Chubb Security Personnel’s head office in Wellingborough on the 23rd March 2004.

The winners are as follows :
TEAM AWARDS
Client: Conoco Phillips, Humberside Award Category: Best Security Team Region: Yorkshire
The team from Chubb Security Personnel won the award for their effective contribution to safety and security at the plant, which includes providing a 24-hour response service to medical emergencies, bomb alerts and security threats, as well as monitoring key elements of site safety. Peter Wright, Chief Fire Officer at the refinery, said: “The team has taken on a very responsible role with interest and enthusiasm, they have dealt with our on-site emergency scenarios and our security with very professional results.”.”
Client: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital Award Category: Best Security Team Region: Midlands
The 21-strong team from Chubb Security Personnel won the award for a record of dedication which includes not only security issues but also a willingness to ‘go the extra mile’ in providing assistance and a caring approach to patients, visitors and staff. “Hospital security staff require special qualities - they have to deal with violent situations one minute and bereaved relatives the next,” said Deputy Site Services Manager, Bill Dye. “Each member of the team has personal strengths and a willingness to take responsibility for thes issues.”
“This excellent all round team regularly proves its worth by a professionalism, hard work and commitment that is a credit to them all,” added team manager, Richard Barrett. “Last year alone they dealt successfully with 1,397 security issues, including 153 physically aggressive incidents.”
Client: Piccadilly Circus Partnership Award Category: Best Team BSIA Region: London
The six-strong team from Chubb Security Personnel, led by supervisor Carol Wheeler, 57, won the award for helping to transform the area into a friendly and welcoming destination. “The team is making the area visibly safer, deterring crime, litter, graffiti and illegal trading, as well as greeting tens of thousands of visitors to the area,” said the Partnership’s Chief Executive, Sarah Porter. Since they began work, street crime in the area has fallen by up to 80 per cent.
“Their commitment, drive and enthusiasm are really making a difference to the heart of London and the daily lives of workers, residents and visitors,” added Sarah Porter.
Client: HSBC Award Category: Best Use of Technology BSIA Region: Yorkshire
Alan Moorhouse, 59, and Steve Huges, 50, who work for Chubb Security Personnel, won the award for using security technology to ensure the arrest and conviction of three burglars who broke into HSBC Bank’s Griffin House building in the city centre in May last year. The officers detected the break-in by monitoring the building’s infra-red security systems and immediately used CCTV cameras to record such clear images of the offenders that police were able to quickly identify them and make arrests.
The bank’s Operations Manager, said: "Alan and Steve’s prompt and professional response prevented a substantial loss. Furthermore, a mini crime wave was terminated when the police arrested the intruders, recovering stolen property from six other burglaries committed in the city on the same evening". Three men later received custodial sentences after pleading guilty to the offences.
INDIVIDUAL AWARDS
Name: Mohammad Aftab Client: Sainsbury’s Award Category: Best Newcomer BSIA Region: North West
Mohammed Aftab, 22, who works for Chubb Security Personnel, won the award for his duties at Sainsbury’s in Whitworth Street, Manchester, only 6 months after joining the security industry. "Mohammed has become a valued officer who takes pride in his job and deals calmly and professionally, even with difficult situations such as violence and abuse against himself, staff and customers,” said his area manager, Jude Boardman. “Staff feel safe when he is on duty, nothing ever gets him down and he lifts the spirits of others.”
The nomination was supported by Sainsbury’s Duty Manager, Jane Wood, who said: “He is extremely conscientious and reliable and we have complete confidence in his judgement. He is now responsible for training new guards at the store.”
About the awards
The BSIA’s Security Officer Awards are presented regionally throughout the UK, with the winners going forward to the national judging phase. The national winners will be presented with their awards by Hazel Blears MP, Minister of State, at the Association’s annual luncheon on 7 July at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
